Abstract

Abhinaya is an important element of our Indian classical dance forms. As per old dance texts Abhinaya is categorised into four types such as Angika Abhinaya, Vachika Abhinaya, Aharya Abhinaya and Satvika Abhinaya. Angika Abhinaya is the expression of movements using the body parts. The usage of hand gestures distinguishes our classical dances from other worldly dance forms. The Mahabharata Chudamani, one of the contemporary Tamil dance texts that clearly explains the grammar for Bharathanatyam, which is revered as the art of our Tamil country, contains information about single-handed and double-handed gestures, along with some unique differences from the explanations given in ancient dance texts. The aim of this study is to develop applications to depict today’s lifestyle in Bharatanatyam using the different kinds of hand gestures found in the Mahabharata Chudamani.
