Abstract

Abstract: In ancient times, Heroic women were confined to their homes doing household works yet , they showed enormous Physical and mental strength. The verse mentioned by Tholkappiyar in “Kanji Thinaai” reveals Women’s bravery. Only those who exhibited their Valiance were eligible to get married. As the saying, ‘Behind every successful man there stands a Woman’, proves right. Women were instrumental in helping men attain triumph. During the war, women who lost their husband, laid a tombstone and worshipped him and hated those who left the Warfield halfway. Tholkappiyar failed to notice the qualities of these women. The Courageousness of the women were evident as men constantly fought in the war came back wounded and women assisted them in recovery. This act of women enhanced men to become a Warrior. When the women lost their husband, the society denied the chance of remarriage, instead put forth two options. One is ‘co-climbing’ and the other fasting. The fasting got its special place in Tholkappiyar’s ‘Thapatha nilai’. Even in “Purananoru”, the act of women’s strict fasting has been described in the part of ‘Thapatha nilai’. Also ‘Aanantha Paiul’ recorded the events of co-climbing. Fasting dated back to sangam era, while co-climbing was a rare thing. Though the fasting was severe and hard, Women sincerely adhered to the principles which revealed the love they have for their husbands.
