Oral traditions are the source of many literary works. Oral traditions, which form the basis of rich literary works, contain many historical information. Oral songs have a unique specialty. They have detailed information of peoples birth to death. In this way, references to the famine that prevailed in Tamil Nadu are widely found in oral songs. In particular, oral songs have clearly recorded the ‘thathu varuda Pancham’ that occurred during the colonial period and the miserable life of the people during the famine.
