The novel has evolved as a tool to depict human life. From the Sangam period to the present day, humans have continued to enslave their fellow beings. This enslavement takes place based on factors such as caste, religion, education, occupation, and economy. Koolamadari the novel, portrays the lifestyle of adolescent boys who are affected by power, selfishness and untouchability as a result of poverty. In Koolamadari, Perumal Murugan vividly presents the lives experiences of goat-herding.
