The songs of the Siddhars are profound philosophical works that express spiritual wisdom, natural science, human physiology, and the mysteries of the universe. The Siddhars state that the five great elements (Pancha Bhoothas) are closely connected with the human body. The stability of the body is attributed to earth, the flow of blood to water, body heat to fire, respiration to air, and consciousness to space. Through these associations, the Siddhars emphasize the philosophy that man and the universe are one. Furthermore, they explain that the five senses - eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin- govern the functioning of the mind, and that by controlling the senses, one can attain spiritual enlightenment. Thus, this study aims to explore the interrelationship between the five elements and the five senses as reflected in the songs of the Siddhars.
