The long-standing history of Tamil society is preserved through a variety of documents produced across different periods. Among these, literary works, grammatical treatises, folk literature, copper plates, and inscriptions are particularly significant sources. Such records are not confined to a single community; rather, they comprehensively document the culture and history of all sections of Tamil people. The epic Silappathikaram, narrated in a poetic and narrative style, highlights the cultural practices, modes of living, musical and theatrical traditions, festivals, worship practices, and systems of governance—from the earliest clans of the Tamils to their development into a flourishing mercantile society.
