Abstract

The Eight Anthologies (Ettuthogai) and the Ten Idylls (Pattupattu) are considered some of the oldest literary works of the Tamil people. These literary creations, which emerged thousands of years ago, beautifully capture human emotions, ways of life, and cultural practices. When a generation remains stable, it is often because the preceding generation laid down principles which were followed sincerely, thus helping that society flourish. Just as any relationship formed through love becomes enduring and meaningful, in Sangam literature too, the foundation of true love begins with the phase called kalavu (secret love), which precedes the formal marital life of karpu (chaste, wedded life). Therefore, the instinct of love and the expression of kalavu are universal among all living beings...
