Ancient Tamil literature offers profound insights into the history, way of life, culture, and values of the Tamil people. Among its many contributions, Sangam literature occupies a unique place in preserving the ethical principles and practices of Tamil society. One such distinguished cultural trait is the tradition of hospitality, which reflects the Tamils’ respect for guests and their commitment to social harmony. Even in eras where transportation and communication were limited, hospitality emerged as a vital social norm. This study examines how Tamil literature portrays the custom of receiving guests warmly, often placing their needs above personal comfort. Hospitality (Virundhombal) is regarded as one of the highest virtues in Tamil domestic life. In ancient Tamil society, welcoming guests and attending to their needs was considered a sacred duty. This practice is extensively reflected in Sangam literature, where poets describe how even in times of conflict or scarcity, people would prioritize the comfort of their guests.
