Abstract

The novel kaanagan reflects the lives of the paliyar tribel community in the Western Ghats. This study aims to explore the folk traditions and cultural practices of the paliyars. Various aspects of their culture, incuding customs, worship rituals, traditions, folk medicine, ceremonies, folk songs, and social structures, are analyzed in detail. The novel depicts significant practices followed by the paliyars, such as childbirth customs, seasonal hunting restrictions, animal sacrifices, divination, and protective rituals like “kanneeru kazhithal” (evil-eye removal). Although the paliyars have lived in harmony with nature, social changes have begum to impact their cultural heritage. This study highlights the uniqueness of paliyar traditions and provides insights into their way of life. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of preserving and respecting their cultural heritage amid ongoing societal transformations.
