The gods are the belief of the people's life. God is considered the primary in human life and actions. The life of the Tamil people is also structured around the god. In the first book of the Tamils, Tolkappiyam, Tolkappiyar mentions the place of residence along with the god to refer to the land where the people lived. He mentions Thirumali as the god of the people living in the forest, Muruga as the god of the people living in the mountains, Indriana as the god of the people living in the fields, and Varuna as the god of the people living in the sea. Tolkappiyar says that the people living in the forest belong to the Mullai land, and the god of the Mullai land is Mayon. Thirumal, the god of the Mullai land, has taken ten incarnations. Comments about the incarnations of Thirumal are found in the Sangam literary songs. When the Sangam hymns refer to the incarnations of Lord Thirumal, they use metaphors and comparisons. The hymns of Lord Thirumal present Lord Thirumal as an image before our eyes. When we contemplate the incarnations taken by Lord Thirumal, the creatures of the world and human life take place within them. The incarnations of Lord Thirumal symbolize the origin of the world, the origin of creatures, and the systems of human life. Although the incarnations of Lord Thirumal are mythological stories, the ideas embedded in them are symbols that explain the life of the world and man. This article also discusses the symbols in Lord Thirumal's incarnations.
