Abstract: In the evolution of Tamil poetry, a discernible progression unfolds, encompassing conventional poetry, modern poetry, prose poetry and new poetry. However, articulating their origins, growth, and decline in a strictly chronological manner proves challenging. The traditional Prosodic form, inherently rooted in communal possession, delved into themes of land, religion, and divinity. Concurrently, dissenting prose poetry emerged, deviating from the established Prosodic conventions. The coexistence and interplay of conventional, modern, and prose poetry coincided with the advent and maturation of new poetry, distinguished by its distinctive form, content, and strategic approach. Despite these historical developments, the contemporary Tamil milieu leans towards the potential prevalence of new poetry. However, the introduction of poetic forms to Tamil was met with varied resistance. Notably, individuals anticipating the future necessity of new poetry engaged in critical assessments of Tamil publications featuring such verses. Within these reviews, an elucidation of the characteristics inherent to new poetry transpires. This study delves into the critique offered by C. Sivasekharam, a prolific commentator on Eelam's new poetry scene. Through an exploration of his critiques, poets of this era gain insight into the fundamental nature of new poetry.
