Abstract

The 2019 Tamil film Asuran, directed by Vetrimaaran, is a significant cinematic work that intricately weaves artistic techniques with profound social themes. This research paper explores how the film effectively portrays powerful concepts such as generational trauma, caste oppression, and resistance, helping audiences to understand these complex social issues with clarity. The critical analysis focuses on the film’s core cinematic elements—narrative structure, editing, cinematography, art direction, sound, and performance. By applying theoretical frameworks such as Representation Theory (Stuart Hall), Realism (André Bazin), and Reception Theory, the study examines how Asuran impacts diverse audiences and contributes to contemporary discussions on caste-based inequality. Through thematic, character, and visual analyses, the research demonstrates how the film’s aesthetic and narrative choices have shaped its wide social influence and critical recognition. Ultimately, the paper argues that Asuran functions both as a work of art and as a form of social activism, redefining the role of Tamil cinema in shaping collective memory and narratives of resistance. The film also received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.
